Mouth Guards

Tough Protection

By their very nature, contact sports carry the risk of many different types of dental injuries. But never fear, the Cherryvalley Dental Care team can help protect your teeth so you can hit the pitch.

Checking The Score

Did you know that contact sports account for nearly 40% of all dental injuries in children? It’s also true that boys between the ages of 8 and 11 are more likely to suffer a mouth injury than girls.

The most common injuries involve the upper incisors and can cause the permanent/adult teeth to become discoloured, fractured or even lost.

A well-fitting mouth protector covers the upper teeth, cushions blows to the face and drastically reduces the risk of broken teeth or damage to the mouth’s soft tissue. And if you wear braces, a mouth guard is even more essential.

Store Bought V Fitted Mouth Guard

Although cheaper, store bought mouth protectors probably won’t fit very well because everyone’s mouth is different. They’re also quite bulky and can make it hard to breathe.

A mouth protector custom made by Cherryvalley Dental Care, though more expensive, will fit your teeth perfectly and offer superior protection. It will stay in place, making it easier to talk and breathe.

As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for!

FAQs

Should I use a mouth protector if I wear braces?

Yes. In fact, it’s especially important! People who wear braces or have had expensive cosmetic dental work are incredibly susceptible to injury and damage to brackets or other fixed orthodontic appliances. The mouth guard will also create a barrier between your braces and your cheek and/or lips to help reduce soft tissue injuries.

Should I wear a guard on my top teeth, bottom teeth or both?

The Cherryvalley Dental Care team will fully assess your situation and find the best solution for you. Mouth protectors usually only cover the upper teeth, but it might be a good idea to use one on the bottom as well, especially if you have braces. Remember, if you have a retainer or other removable appliances, you need to take them out before playing any contact sports.
